The Life and Pension Industry in Malawi in Malawi dates back to 1930 when the first Life Office, Old Mutual started selling Life Assurance products to clients in what was then known as Nyasaland. Old Mutual later opened an office in Blantyre in 1954 with the appointment of a resident representative. In 1976 this office was upgraded to a full Branch office of Old Mutual South Africa, a company established in Cape Town, South Africa on 17th May 1845. In 1987 the office moved to the newly built Old Mutual Building at the top of Glyn Jones Road in Blantyre, currently the Head Office of Old Mutual Malawi. Old Mutual continued to invest in Malawi, as more modern buildings like Unit House and Umoyo House, carried the trusted three anchors Brand identity of the company that have stood the test of time since 1845.

A highlight In the history of Old Mutual  Malawi is the is the incorporation of the local operation in June 1998 and the appointment of a local Board of Directors, followed by demutualization and listing of Old Mutual plc a year later on 12th July 199. At the time of demutualization, Old Mutual plc awarded free shares to all policy holders and pension funds that were eligible to receive free shares in terms of the demutualization agreement. Old Mutual Malawi is a subsidiary of Old Mutual plc, an international financial services group and currently the only foreign listed counter on the Malawi Stock Exchange. The main listing of Old Mutual plc is on the London Stock Exchange with a market capitalization of approximately US$ 8.1 Billion as of on 4 October 2004. It is also ranked 304th on the 2004 Fortune Global 500 list of “the world’s  largest corporations” with total assets under management of 130 billion British Pounds.
